Bitdefender is known for its antivirus software, later they decided to also offer VPN in their software package. In this way they try to add more security functions to their package in addition to the antivirus software. The VPN option is therefore an addition to the existing packages, namely: Antivirus Plus, Total Security multi-device and Internet Security multi-device.

The server number is still somewhat limited with Bitdefender VPN. This makes sense because the VPN service is still in its infancy. This is in a way a disadvantage. Depending on where you are the servers are far away and this can make the speed of the VPN connection much lower. In addition, it may also be that the available servers are extremely busy and therefore not optimally usable.
Bitdefender is available for all commonly used operating systems: namely Android, iOS, MacOS and Windows. If you also want to use Bitdefender VPN on other devices, such as a router, this is not possible despite the OpenVPN protocol being used. The required data to establish a connection to the OpenVPN servers of Bitdefender is missing.
It is therefore only possible at the time of writing to connect the VPN to Android. Use iOS, MacOS and Windows. The setting options are very limited with all software. For example, we cannot find the very important option for a kill switch in the software during this review. Something we find very disappointing for a company like Bitdefender.
Installing Bitdefender VPN is easy. When you install or have installed Bitdefender, VPNfunctionality is automatically added when you purchase this option on the website.
If you are an existing Bitdefender customer, the appearance of the software will not be unknown to you. In the main screen you can choose privacy on the left side. In that overview there is then the option to opt for VPN. When you click on the VPN option you will see a list of available servers between which you can choose. In the free version you only have the option to click on “connect”, then the software selects 1 of the free servers itself.

In the Bitdefender settings screen you also have the option to automatically start the VPN connection when Windows starts. This is a nice and handy option.
All in all we like the Windows VPN software. There are providers that have much better software and also offer this for a much lower price.
With Android you can also find the VPN option in the app of Bitdefender itself. Switching on the VPN connection is simple, but here too there are no extra options. All in all, the Bitdefender Android app works great, but the possibilities for the VPN connection are very limited.
For MacOS (macbooks and iMacs) and iOS (iPhones and iPads), Bitdefender has recently also developed software with which you can use Bitdefender’s VPN connections. Previously there was no possibility to use the VPN connection on Apple equipment, but that has since been resolved.
Just like the software for Windows and Android, we are not very enthusiastic about Bitdefender VPN for the Mac. The options are very limited and you have little influence on the settings of the VPN connection. As a result, we do not really trust the connections and we actually recommend a different VPN for your Mac. Fortunately there are enough good VPNs for MacOS and the same goes for iOS.
It is (too) unclear what the privacy and security measures are of the Bitdefender VPN service. For example, it is unclear what kind of encryption is used and it is also unclear what the privacy policy of Bitdefender VPN entails.
In the terms and conditions you can find that they do not send contact data or internet data from users to third parties. But it is unclear to us whether logs are kept of the internet use of its users. For the sake of convenience, we assume that Bitdefender VPN does keep logs.
As a service that must guarantee the privacy of its users, we believe that this information must be transparent. This applies to both openness in the encryption that is used and openness in the logging policy that is used. The fact that Bitdefender does not do this causes points to go off in this review. For a VPN service with clear and good privacy and security you better, for example ExpressVPN or cheaper NordVPN look.
We noticed that the VPN service nowadays indicates that the VPN connections are made possible by Hotspot Shield. It is unclear how Hotspot Shield supports Bitdefender VPN. It is quite possible that Hotspot Shield makes the VPN servers available to Bitdefender VPN.
If this is the case, this is a bad sign regarding privacy. It is known that Hotspot Shield keeps logs of its users and if you use the VPN connection as a Bitdefender VPN user it is quite possible and very likely that Hotspot Shield can view your data.
If you use Bitdefender as an antivirus product, you already have a subscription. Then you can already use Bitdefender VPN with a data limit and other restrictions.
To use the so-called Bitdefender premium VPN package you will have to buy this extra package. The price for using the VPN servers is very reasonable in itself. It is true that you already paid for other Bitdefender’s main package, these total costs are very high again if you are only looking for a VPN solution.
At the time of writing, the extra costs for the Premium VPN package are € 24.99 per year. But due to the costs of the Bitdefender package you pay at least € 79.98. This is reasonable for a total security package, but if you are only interested in the VPN functionality of Bitdefender, we think the price for Bitdefender VPN is too high. If you already have the security package and you only complete it with the VPN functionality, this VPN functionality will cost you € 2.50 per month.
The free version of Bitdefender VPN can therefore be used if you have a subscription to a Bitdefender software package. As mentioned, there are restrictions on this free VPN . So you do not have a free server choice in the free version. In addition, there is also a data limit of 200mb. This data limit is virtually unworkable, so you have used 200mb.
The free version of Bitdefender VPN is sufficient if, for example, you want to use it to check your mail at the airport or use secure internet banking.
